Optical Distortion Correction for Digital Images

OptiCorr is for measuring and correcting the following optical errors existing in digital photographic images:

Image Distortion (barrel or pincushion distortion)

Color Fringing (caused by chromatic aberration)

These errors exist in every image produced by usual optical lenses, but the their extent can widely vary depending on other features of the lens, and its build quality. For example, consumer-grade lenses having a wide zoom range suffer from the above errors more (especially at the lower end of zoom range).

The above errors cause digital camera images to look slightly bended (straight lines are not straight in the image), and cause the purple-green fringes in the corners of the image.

For correcting images, the distortion and color fringing should be measured for the lens used for taking the image, at the focal length used. OptiCorr provides an automated method to measure these errors, and create correction data sets, which can later be used for correcting images. At the same time, OptiCorr provides facilities to share correction data sets with other users, and to obtain data sets created by other users. So, most popular cameras and lenses will have correction data sets available as soon as any user measures it.

The full process of creating a correction data set when a new camera or lens is used for the first time is:

Create a photo of the printed test image (don't worry about slight photographic errors - most of them are automatically compensated for. See explanation)

The correction data set is created and entered into the Correction Database of OptiCorr

Once correction data is available, the process of correcting images is as simple as:
